CDC Birth Data Update
What It Says About Trump's Immigration Policy
Birth data is a lagging indicator for immigration policies. For example, if an illegal alien is already in the country and pregnant when Trump is sworn into office, she will likely try to wait until she can have a baby. Then, they are granted citizenship.
If she’s not pregnant, then there’s less of an incentive to stay.
Newly released CDC data indicate that Trump’s mass deportation efforts, which include practices such as self-deportation, may be having an effect.
With the exception of Indian and Cuban immigrants, all other large populations have seen their birth rates decline by double digits compared to last February.
Births from Chinese immigrants are -17.5 percent, Colombians are -10.5 percent, Ecuadorans are -22 percent, El Salvadorians are -15 percent, Guatemalans are -16 percent, Haitians are -16 percent, Hondurans are -15 percent, and Mexicans are -13 percent.
With the immigration crackdown, the U.S. fertility rate has dipped to 1.57 children per woman, which is still larger than most countries in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. There are more factors than just immigration to explain the dip.
