The most recent Siena University/New York Times poll found that a substantial number of Democrats want the party to moderate on most issues as it looks to the future. Yet when you look at the brightest political stars since the presidential election in 2024, they include Zohran Mamdani, Graham Platner, Abdul El-Sayed, Peggy Flannagan, Francesca Hong, Analila Mejia, and Brad Lander.

So, why is there a Grand Canyon-sized hole between what Democrats say they want and what they’re voting for?

The poll asked Democratic voters whether they wanted the party to move to the center, the left, or neither direction on several issues.

Overall, 47 percent of Democrats wanted the party to move to the center, while 28 percent wanted it to move to the left.

On specific issues, including crime, immigration, and transgender issues, more people in the party wanted Democrats to move to the center than to the left.

So, what issues did Democrats want the party to move further to the left on?
