United States

  • Immigration

NBC News reported that the Biden Administration is making a gigantic reversal and is building a 17-mile border wall, waiving 26 federal laws to speed up the process. Open-border advocate and DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas said, “There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas.” President Biden, on the hand called the construction, “a waste of money.”

Axios reported that the Biden administration has made other moves on immigration enforcement. First, they plan to resume deportation flights to Venezuela in the coming days after the government in Caracas agreed to cooperate for the first time in years. This is a big move to deport some illegal aliens from Venezuela who do not meet the qualifications for asylum. Secondly, they also struck a deal with the Mexican government where the Latin American country has agreed to people along its northern border on behalf of the U.S.

Biden has also resumed several Trump-era policies, including the transit ban for asylum-seekers who cross the border illegally and do not first seek refuge in a country they traveled through are being rejected for asylum, expanding the program to deport families faster, and using State Department foreign aid to another country’s deportation efforts for the first time in history. (Axios) It’s important to note that the Biden Administration’s hardening on immigration issues comes as Sen. Bob Menendez, one of the most prominent critics of any immigration enforcement, is under federal investigation and has been sidelined in the Senate. His indictment may have opened up opportunities for Biden to become more hawkish on the border.

The Biden Administration is redesignating and extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals from Cameroon -- after similar moves for Afghanistan and Venezuela in the last month. They’ll be allowed to stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation and work permits till at least June 7, 2025. There are about 2,000 Cameroon nationals living in the U.S. under TPS.

The Washington Post detailed in a lengthy political piece how Joe Biden’s immigration fiasco is causing the most pro-open-border Democrat mayors and governors to ask that he close the border or fix the situation. Cities like New York and Chicago are headed towards economic breakdowns as the number of migrants heading to sanctuary cities with large welfare programs never seems to end.

According to Mayor Trent Staggs, ICE has designated Utah as a sanctuary state because of the lack of cooperation from local governments. In 2011, Utah passed the “Illegal Immigration Enforcement Act,” which essentially barred any local government from self-designating as a sanctuary city and ensured we would enforce all immigration laws. Yet, in the past few years, Utah Sheriffs have pushed back on the federal oversight requirements, saying they are too stringent and burdensome. They have created a “de facto” sanctuary policy since the agreements with/ the sheriffs haven’t been renewed.
