Immigration
Despite President Biden’s cratering poll numbers on immigration and the record-breaking number of migrants coming across the border, CBS News reported that the Biden Administration plans on dramatically increasing the number of asylum-seekers processed along the U.S.-Mexico border by admitting nearly 40,000 migrants at official crossings each month. In addition, many are applying for asylum on a new mobile app that was started by the Trump Administration but swung into high gear by Biden. This is almost double the previous record-breaking amount and signals that nearly a million additional migrants would be coming to the U.S. every year, waiting for a judge to see if they meet the requirements for asylum (over 95 percent of recent migrants don’t.)
Breitbart News reported that three of the six illegal aliens charged with the murder of a 15-year-old Hispanic boy in Maryland entered the U.S. as unaccompanied minors, and two of them are members of the gang MS-13. Often, gangs use the unaccompanied minor asylum program to bring in recruits.
The number of Guatemalans living in the U.S. is so large that three of the country’s presidential candidates are campaigning for votes in Los Angeles. Nearly 90,000 Guatemalans registered to vote in their home country live in the U.S. The metropolitan triangle that comprises Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Santa Ana is home to the largest share of the U.S. Guatemalan diaspora, about 230,000 people out of a total estimated to be as large as 1.6 million. The debate was held at the Scientology Celebrity Center, which used the event to try and recruit more members from Latin America. (The Los Angeles Times)
The Ninth Circuit unanimously decided that the federal statute that criminalizes illegal re-entry is constitutional. An Obama-appointed district court judge out of Nevada named Miranda Du previously ruled that Section 1326 was enacted with a discriminatory purpose and disproportionately impacted “Mexican and Latinx” individuals. It violated the plaintiff’s constitutional rights. (FAIR)
Migrants have found a loophole to President Biden’s requirement that asylum seekers apply on the new app the Biden Administration rolled out. Border Report found that migrants at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. They are waiting for access to the U.S., claiming the technology used by the CBP One online system for appointments is faulty, thus giving him and others a reason to ask for an appointment in person at ports of entry such as San Ysidro.
Economy
Gov. Kemp scored a huge win. Finland-based company Admares announced they’re opening a $750 million manufacturing facility in Waycross, located near the border with Florida. The company, which specializes in the mass production of buildings and houses, expects the factory to employ more than 1,400 workers. Waycross is a county of just 14,000 people, that’s a huge boost to the local economy and part of the effort to create some economy outside the Atlanta metro area. This is primarily a big boost for blue-collar workers. (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
Virginia will eliminate degree requirements and preferences for nearly 90 percent of state jobs while putting equal emphasis on experience and other training. (Richmond Times-Dispatch) Maryland did this last year and saw a 41 percent increase in the number of non-college-educated workers hired to positions. Hopefully, this is just as successful.
