Elon Musk allies at DOGE are working to terminate the parole status for 6,300 illegal aliens with criminal records or on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. DOGE claims more than 900 of the 6,300 flagged individuals whose parole status is being revoked were collecting Medicaid, 41 received unemployment insurance, and 22 had federal student loans. Judge Jamee E. Comans ruled that the Trump Administration has the right to deport pro-Hamas student activist Mahmoud Khalil. The constitutional issues at the heart of the case will most likely result in a fuller hearing in the Federal Court in New Jersey. (The New York Times)

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration will be allowed to deport illegal aliens expected to be part of the Tren de Aragua gang through the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the three liberal members of the Court. (CNN)

  • Education

A report from Chalk Beat News asked 1,600 New York City parents why they chose to leave or stay in the public school system. The primary driver for people leaving the public school system was that the academics weren’t rigorous enough or that they were leaving the city. The biggest reasons people chose to stay were the robust apprenticeship programs and greater ethnic diversity than private schools.

  • Trump Administration

The Wall Street Journal did a deep dive into how Trump’s first year in office is set to eclipse Biden’s level of spending by about $154 billion more than in the same period in 2024 during President Joe Biden's administration. Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security spending are set to increase by about $62 billion automatically as new retirees move into the programs, and the interest on the debt is set to increase by $25 billion. Not to mention that federal salaries are set to increase by about $3 billion because of a 2 percent wage increase Biden pushed through during the last year of his presidency. So, while DOGE has claimed more than 100 cost-cutting wins, it doesn’t even scrape the surface of the normal spending increases through our entitlement programs and interest on the debt, not to mention the military.

While spending increases, the deficit has decreased because of increased economic output and more people paying taxes. Reuters reported that the deficit was only $161 billion in March, down 32 percent from a year earlier. The Treasury reported that net customs duties in March totaled $8.2 billion, a $2.1 billion increase from a year earlier and the highest since September 2022. This is the lowest deficit number for March in at least five years.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that it will monitor antisemitic activity on social media and the physical harassment of Jewish individuals of foreigners applying for permanent resident status and international students. (The Guardian)

President Trump told the 936,500 migrants brought into the US during Biden’s presidency through the CBP One App that they had to leave the country immediately. The CBP One App was created to offer migrants another way to the US without giving the negative optics of rushing the border, negatively affecting Biden’s poll numbers. These people were provided presidential parole but had no legal status in the country. President Trump has revoked presidential parole for over about 2.5 million people, primarily from Haiti, Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua. (AP)

The DOJ has terminated funding for legal programs that provide know-your-rights training and legal education + information to immigrants in immigration courts and detention center settings—and legal counsel to children in deportation proceedings. (Politico)
