  • Immigration

On his way out of the White House, President Biden extended Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for nearly one million aliens from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela, none of whom came to be deported by the Trump Administration for 18 months. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the decision grants relief to roughly 232,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese, 104,000 Ukrainians, and 600,000 Venezuelans. This shows how widely corrupt TPS is, especially given that under President Buekele, El Salvador has become one of the safest places in North America. Yet, the Biden Administration insists that sending people there is still too dangerous. (CNN)

The U.S. Senate voted 84-9 on cloture of the Laken Riley Act, with only nine Democrats: Booker (NJ), Hirono (HI), Kim (NJ), Markey (MA), Murray (WA), Paladino (CA), and Schiff (CA). It’s important to note that the bill the House passed and the one Senate voted on are two different bills. The Senate plans to add amendments to the bill, so look for both parties to add new portions to the bill and meet in conference for a singular version that both branches of the legislature can agree on. I believe some version of the bill will ultimately pass, but the devil is in the details. (Center for Immigration Studies)

Stephen Miller told Senate Republicans that President Trump plans to unveil 100 Executive Orders on day one of his presidency, including a number on immigration. Some include reinstating Title 42, building a border fence, and allowing local police departments to assist ICE in deporting illegal immigrants. A source told me that the Executive Order to abolish birthright citizenship for illegal aliens has been written, but we don’t know if it will also be signed on the first day of the administration. The number of fraudulent immigration services, including lawyers providing legal assistance for illegal aliens, is on the rise in New York City. January 2024 saw 39 complaints about misleading ads, misrepresentation of offered services, uncompleted services, a lack of refunds, and missing paperwork. (Gothamist)

  • Technology

TikTok announced that it will shut down on January 19 unless the Supreme Court delays or strikes down its forced sale. ByteDance, the Chinese-based company with strong ties to the CCP, is refusing to sell the product, and given that Congress voted for it to be banned after a series of national security concerns, it’s unlikely that Trump will be able to reverse the ban despite receiving pressure from TikTok’s co-owner and big GOP donor Jeff Yass. The tech platform says the law hurts First Amendment rights, which is a load of crap. (CBS News)

  • Economy

Mark Zuckerberg’s company Meta has immediately suspended its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program, including hiring, training, and supplier selection. This comes days after Meta announced they’re ending their fact-checking for hate speech. This should not signal that Zuckerberg has gone MAGA; he’s an opportunist who realizes this is also good for his bottom line and would switch again if the situation benefitted him. (Axios)

BlackRock announced that it has decided to leave the Net Zero Asset Managers, a major multi-trillion dollar group of investment managers committed to supporting the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, marking a significant symbolic victory for anti-ESG politicians who had been threatening the investment giant over its participation in the coalition. (ESG Today)

President-elect Donald Trump is considering declaring a national economic emergency to provide legal justification for a large swath of universal tariffs. (CNN)
