Immigration
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reversed course on the idea of receiving non-Mexican nationals who were deported from the United States. During her daily press briefing, she said that in cases where the US would not return migrants to their countries, “we can collaborate through different mechanisms.” This would be a tremendous win for President Trump even before he gets into office, having the ability to return migrants to Mexico, where they are processed and eventually deported. The goal of the last Trump Administration, and I believe the next one, will be to extend the borders of the United States so fewer migrants can enter the interior. (CNN)
Education
Florida-based DEI non-profits and for-profit businesses like the Florida People of Color, created to educate companies and universities about marginalized communities, are on the brink of bankruptcy because of Gov. DeSantis’ Stop Woke Act. Since DeSantis signed the legislation in 2022, many DEI organizations say they’ve lost 50 percent of their business. (Miami Herald)
Economy
President Biden has blocked the nearly $15 billion accusation of U.S. Steel by the Japanese-based firm Nippon Steel of Japan. Biden’s decision comes after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, known as CFIUS, failed to reach a consensus on the possible national security risks of the deal last month and sent Biden a long-awaited report on the merger. Trump also agreed with the decision to block the purchase. Both companies will likely prepare a series of lawsuits because they feel it’s not a national security threat. (The New York Times)
Elon Musk has become one of the most high-profile H-1b visa program supporters, but he hasn’t disclosed that Tesla has more than doubled the number of H-1b visa workers over the last year. According to a National Foundation for American Policy report, “Tesla had 742 approved H1B petitions for initial employment in FY 2024, more than double its total of 328 in FY 2023 and 337 in FY 2022. Tesla also had 1,025 H-1B petitions for continuing employment (primarily extensions for existing employees) approved in FY 2024.”

Speaker Johnson won re-election as Speaker of the House after just a single round of voting, with only Rep. Thomas Massie voting against him. This could be a sign that the party acknowledges how fragile the majority is and how creating a circus could easily hand the Speakership to the Democrats.
A new report in The Wall Street Journal found that millennials and older members of Gen Z are increasingly leaving marriage and having children. A third of young people in America will likely never marry, and 47 percent are unlikely to have children.

China
New GDP forecasts for China have slowed considerably, especially compared to a decade ago. In 2015, experts believed China would surpass the American economy by 2024. They now predict that the U.S. will be dominant going into 2040. (The Wall Street Journal)
