Immigration
The Immigration Accountability Project leaked a draft of the Senate border bill that Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford has been negotiating for the last few months. Among the provisions offered in the bill include:
Increasing green cards by 50,000 annually
Work permits for the children of H1-b visa holders
Immediate work permits for every illegal alien released from custody
Taxpayer-funded lawyers to certain unaccompanied minors and mentally incompetent aliens
Expulsion authority for a limited number of days only if encounters exceed 5,000 per day over seven days
Restricts parole for those who enter without authorization between ports of entry
This is basically a wishlist for big corporations and Democrats. Almost everything in this list were proposals AOC offered up. It gives away the entire farm. A total and complete sellout to big business and open borders Democrats that will actually make the situation at the border worse and incentivize migrants to stay in the United States. Sources on the Hill told me they think the best chance to defeat the compromise is in the House because they believe 10-20 Republican Senators will support the bill. After reading the main components of the compromise, Speaker Johnson tweeted, “Absolutely not.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is urging Republicans to accept the deal, but many conservative Republicans, even those not known for being immigration hawks, oppose the deal. Sen. Rand Paul called the deal “a sellout.” (Breitbart News)
The Texas National Guard has taken control of Shelby Park in the city of Eagle Pass, one of the centers of the migrant crisis, and is refusing to allow Border Patrol to enter the area. Border Patrol praised Governor Abbott for taking control of the area. "Governor Abbott is not harming Border Patrol operations. He is enhancing them," National Border Patrol Council Brandon Judd said in a statement. "His seizing control of Shelby Park allows our agents to deploy to troubled spots that experience high numbers of gotaways. Governor Abbott’s actions should be seen as a force multiplier."
Gov. Abbott tweeted, “As caravans of migrants are moving through Mexico toward the U.S. border, we are making clear that Texas will be a tough place to cross.” (Fox News)
The Department of Homeland Security is suing the state of Texas and the Abbott Administration for their actions. Given prior decisions, the Court will most likely rule in favor of DHS, but with the conservative-leaning Court - who knows?
Congressman Matt Rosendale has authored the bill H.R. 6940, which would create an immigration moratorium until there are fewer than 10,000 border crossings per year. The bill currently has five cosponsors: Reps. Harris, Gosar, Boebert, Collins, and Weber.
A new program in Maine will offer migrants up to two years of taxpayer-funded housing. Migrants will be forced to pay 30 percent of their rent once they find a job, but those applying for asylum cannot work while their application is being processed, which could take years. (Newsmax)
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has unveiled $375 million in budget cuts, including cutting funding to firefighters and the state’s Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) known as MassHealth., while at the same time rolling out college financial aid to illegal aliens. Economy
A new report from The Wall Street Journal found that the information technology sector grew by only 700 jobs over 2023, a drastic slowdown from the 267,000 jobs added in 2022. Despite this immense slowdown in hiring, the tech industry still demands Congress increase the number of H-1b visas to bring foreigners to work in tech jobs.
