Sens. Durbin and Padilla have sent a letter to President Biden urging him to scrap plans for transit rule restricting asylum claims from migrants who didn’t seek protections in other countries en route to the US. They write, “establishing a higher standard for asylum based on passage through a third country would … undermine the fundamental right to asylum, violating the letter & spirit of the law.” This is a significant development because it means that the Biden Administration is further along in recreating certain Trump-era immigration restrictions and that it’s upset even centrist Democrats like Durbin.
Customs and Border Patrol announced they encountered 156,274 migrants at the border, a sharp decline from the previous month but still higher than January 2021, 2020, or 2019. Moreover, it is the first month in 10 months where encounters were below 200,000. Yet there’s a significant drop at the border because Biden is suddenly cracking down on migration. It’s because he’s found alternative ways to let them come to the U.S. The cornerstone of those measures is expanding a humanitarian parole program for Venezuelans introduced last year to include Nicaraguans, Cubans, and Haitians. The program allows 30,000 nationals each month if they did not cross illegally, had a sponsor already in the U.S., and met other conditions. Biden is hopeful that the new humanitarian programs that allow hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter the U.S. via an app and recreating several Trump-era immigration policies surrounding safe third-country agreements will make the optics much better ahead of his re-election.
The House of Representatives voted on a resolution disapproving of Washington D.C.’s decision to allow non-citizens the right to vote in local elections. The measure passed by 260 to 162, with 42 Democrats siding with every Republican. Here is a map of how every member of Congress, with those in red voting in favor of the measure and those in blue opposing it. Some noticeable swing district Democrats sided with letting illegals vote, a big mistake for 2024.
A 19-year-old illegal alien from Honduras named Alejandro Jose Martinez-Hernandez escaped the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center in Texas. He had been arrested for illegally entering the country with deep ties to the Mexican drug cartel and may be extremely dangerous. (News 4 SA)
The tight labor market is causing businesses to increase salaries for migrant workers, with many noting that their wages have increased from $13 an hour to $18. Two things worth pointing out, Americans' salaries would be even higher if we further cut legal and illegal immigration levels. Secondly, the historical waves of migrants coming across the border haven't done anything to ease labor markets. (The Wall Street Journal)
