Immigration
Axios reported that the Biden Administration is considering how to end Title 42, the last major Trump immigration law still in effect. Title 42 allows for the quick expulsion of immigrants for fear of public health and was started at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Many within the Biden Administration fear that the end of this program will result in the greatest rush on the border seen in half a century, with an additional 170,000 migrants heading towards the U.S.
After spending years refusing to defend the U.S. southern border, Congress voted to give nearly $14 billion to Ukraine to stop the advancing Russian forces, Breitbart reported.
The Biden Administration has offered Temporary Protective Services (TPS) to Afghans living in the U.S. for 18 months. Axios reported that this would allow them to get work permits and protect them from deportation. Past administrations have used TPS as de facto amnesty for decades. Once granted, TPS has rarely been undone, including under former President Donald Trump.
The Texas Tribune noted that Trump-appointed judges have ruled in favor on seven occasions with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on cases where he has sued the Biden Administration over their immigration policy. This is how Trump’s judicial policy continues to be a thorn in the side of the Biden Administration.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reported that there was a total of 164,973 encounters along the Southwest land border in February, a seven percent increase compared to January. Of those, 30 percent involved individuals who had at least one prior encounter in the previous 12 months, compared to an average one-year re-encounter rate of 14 percent for FY 2014-2019.
CBS News reported that the U.S. government ordered the removal of personnel and their families from the U.S. consulate building in Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Texas, after violence broke out following the arrest of drug cartel leader Juan Gerardo Treviño. This story went vastly underreported by the mainstream media because they don’t want to emphasize that our nation borders a narco-state.
Foreign Policy
The Washington Post reported that two dozen Republicans had signed a letter to President Joe Biden asking him to do more for the Ukrainian military effort. The letter comes as there has been an increased effort to push Republican Congressmen to support military engagement against Putin. I was in Washington D.C. over the week and spoke to many Congressmen about Ukraine. The saber-rattling from those on the Hill has reached a new level of insanity. One Congressman told me he supports putting a bust of Zelensky in the Capitol next to Churchill. Another one told me he supports giving refugee status to Russian soldiers who abandon the war effort and would even support giving them $100,000 if they brought their weapons with them when they surrendered. A freshman Congresswoman told me that she believes there could be an outside effort putting pressure on Congress. She said that she received hundreds of calls about supporting Ukraine, but none were from her district.
