Immigration
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay after a Reagan-appointed federal judge granted a preliminary injunction against the state of Texas, telling them to take down their 1,000-foot-long segment of the spiked orange buoys in the Rio Grande River. The Washington Post reported that Texas did not apply for federal approval to put barriers in the middle of the river, an act that Abbott characterized as a matter of state sovereignty. The Fifth Circuit’s ruling could prevent Texas from having to take immediate steps to start moving the barriers. (Fox News)
In an address to constituents in the very liberal Upper West Side, New York City, Eric Adams said that the migration problem shows no end in sight and will “destroy New York City.” (The New York Times) More than 60,000 migrants live in New York City’s shelter system, which will double by the end of next year. Experts originally predicted that migrants would cost the city $12 billion over three years and leave NYC with a budget gap of the same amount. If the numbers double next year, it will lead to an unprecedented deficit for the city and teetering it on the verge of bankruptcy. Making matters worse, more than 2,000 high-income earners abandoned the city from 2020-2021. Adams is up for re-election in 2025 and will take attacks from the far left and the right.
The situation in New York is growing so dire because of the migrant crisis that Mayor Adams demanded that all New York City agencies implement 5 percent cuts to cover the cost of more migrants. (New York Post)
Progressive politicians in New York City lashed out at Mayor Adams’ dire warning that mass immigration was destroying the city. Calling him everything from “MAGA garbage” and saying New Yorkers worried about the migrant crisis were wrong and playing on fears. (Politico)
Democrats from blue states and cities have put added pressure on the Biden Administration to address the migrant crisis. The Los Angeles Times is considering a new proposal to make illegal aliens remain in Texas instead of traveling to other states. The Biden plan would force certain migrant families to remain in Texas — or possibly other border states — by tracking their location through GPS monitoring devices, such as ankle bracelets, according to the three officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. This plan would receive immense backlash from immigration groups and Republican governments. Extending the plan to other border states could quickly lead to an economic crisis for local governments in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
Carlos Corrales-Ramirez, a 20-year-old illegal alien from Honduras, was arrested and charged this week with second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the stabbing death of 28-year-old Jario Hernandez-Sanchez in the city of Troy in Rensselaer County, New York. He was previously arrested at the border for trying to enter the U.S. illegally.
Congress
Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) is proposing an amendment to a Department of Homeland Security funding bill to stop the expansion of H-2A visas. Clyde’s amendment “strikes Section 407, which allows certain nonimmigrants to be admitted to the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2024 to perform agricultural labor or services, regardless of whether that labor or service is temporary or seasonal.” (Breitbart News)
