United States

  • Immigration

Legislation that would allow non-citizens to vote in local elections in Washington DC quickly gained momentum Tuesday as a committee approved the bill, sending it to the full D.C. Council for consideration. If it ultimately passes, undocumented immigrants, green card holders, and people with visas would be able to vote in elections for positions in the city, such as mayor, council member, and attorney general. Americans' Google searches and story interactions around crime and immigration are eclipsing abortion and the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, according to Axios data with insights from Google Trends. Democrats have been laser-focused on abortion as a winning issue, but the new data shows a waning interest nationally after the initial surge that followed the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade. It remains high in some states and districts, including Indiana, which passed a near-total ban last month.

Texas officials awarded two contracts on Thursday worth $307 million to build nearly 14 miles of new barriers along the Texas-Mexico border. The Texas Facilities Commission voted to approve a $167 million contract for New Mexico-based Southwest Valley Constructors Co. to build nearly 6.7 miles of border wall near Del Rio and a second contract worth $140 million to Montana-based BFBC of Texas, which plans to build 6.95 miles of wall in the Rio Grande Valley. • Midterm

The number of mail ballots sent to Pennsylvania voters crossed the 1 million mark on Thursday and the breakdown was 73 percent Democrat to just 18 percent Republican. This is much lower than the 2.6 million requested last year for the State Supreme Court race or 3.1 million in 2020 for President, but voters still have a month.
