Education
California adopted a new math policy based on critical race theory (CRT). The new math curriculum guidance framework applies social justice, equity, and cultural responsiveness as part of math. This is supposed to allow students who underperform in math (mostly black and Hispanic students) to have engaged participation and “a sense of belonging” to math. It also helps them use math to address social inequities in society. (Ed Week)
The Boston Globe reported that the Cambridge Public Schools eliminated advanced math in middle school, intending to reduce disparities between low-income children of color and their more affluent peers. This is also CRT in praxis; erasing disparities means lowering standards for everyone.
