The Department of Homeland Security has identified over 400 aliens who crossed into the U.S. in the past three years as “subjects of concern” because an ISIS-affiliated human smuggling network brought them. While over 150 of them have been arrested, the whereabouts of over 50 remain unknown. (NBC News)
Gov. DeSantis’ law, which he signed last year, directing hospitals that accept Medicaid to ask patients about their immigration status when they seek treatment, has led to a 54 percent drop in expenditures this fiscal year. The state is expected to save about $80 million on what would have been used in the state’s Emergency Medical Assistance program for undocumented immigrants. (Politico)
Cory Alvarez, an alien from Haiti, was released on $500 bail after being accused of raping a 15-year-old child in a Massachusetts shelter, despite a request from federal immigration officials to keep him in jail. (The New York Post)
Economy
A Clinton and Trump-appointed federal judge on the Ninth Circuit revived a lawsuit brought by Purushothaman Rajaram, a naturalized U.S. citizen who says that the tech giant Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram) passes over American workers for jobs in favor of cheaper visa recipients. Rajaram is seeking to represent a class that includes thousands of workers. The Court ruled that Meta violated a Civil War-era law barring discrimination in contracts based on "alienage" extends to bias against U.S. citizens. This is not the first time a tech giant has been in legal trouble for discriminating against American workers; last year, Apple was forced to pay $25 million for discriminating against Americans. Another Trump-appointed judge dissented, and the split decision raises the likelihood that the case will be brought before the Supreme Court. (Reuters)
